Why I built it

I wanted the familiar Todoist workflow with control over the interface, features, and rules for my own household. Claude and Codex helped me build KenDo around that goal.

The first version, built with Sol 6, was ugly and buggy. Switching to Opus 5.5 gave me the Todoist-style interface I wanted with little additional prompting.

What it does

  • Today and Upcoming views, projects, sections, subtasks, and list or board layouts.
  • Quick Add with natural-language scheduling, labels, priorities, and shared assignments.
  • Recurring tasks, separate scheduled dates and deadlines, and completion history.
  • Family workspaces with project-level permissions, assigned chores, activity, and in-app notifications.
  • Project archiving, keyboard shortcuts, a command palette, and a REST API.

How it works

Next.js and React run on Vercel. Supabase provides authentication, PostgreSQL, and realtime events. A shared workspace snapshot seeds the TanStack Query cache; optimistic writes update the interface while PostgreSQL Row Level Security enforces permissions.

KenDo architecture showing the workspace snapshot, browser cache, authenticated writes, REST API, and realtime refresh.

Bringing my history across

The Todoist migration imported 1,588 tasks and preserved 2,550 actual completion events, reaching back to January 2015. An independent check compared 6,107 imported records and 71,057 fields, while leaving all 32 pre-existing records unchanged. Attachment metadata and links were preserved; file bytes were not transferred.

What's next

The core task workflow and family collaboration are live. Shopping mode, a family dashboard, email delivery, push notifications, and scheduled reminders remain in the backlog.
